Canyon de Chelly National Monument

Canyon de Chelly National Monument is considered one of the oldest monuments in Arizona, as it was established in 1931, as a part of the National Park Service.  The monument, which is in the northeasternpart of Arizona, is within the limits of the Navajo Nation and lies in the Four Corners area. The memorial is designed to reflectone of the longest unceasinglypopulated landscapes of North America. Moreover, Canyon de Chelly is one of the most frequently visited national memorials in the United States.

Visitors of theCanyon de Chelly National Monumentwill be amazed to see the skeletons of the nativepeople who lived in the area. The memorial covers a vast area of 83,840 acres andincludes the floors as well as rims of the three main canyons, such as del Muerto,de Chelly, and Monument. All the three canyons were intersected by watercourses with headwaters in the Chuska Mountains, which is situated on the eastern part of the Canyon de Chelly National Monument.

However, no land in the Canyon de Chelly National Monument is federally owned.  It is completely owned by the Navajo Nation’s Navajo Tribal Trust. It is the only National Park Service division, which is owned and cooperatively handled in this manner.
